Gilbert is central to many of Arizona’s scenic attractions. Northeast lies the Superstition Mountains, the location of the legendary Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine, as well as the Tonto National Forest which contains scenery ranging from rugged desert to cool pines. South lies Saguaro National Park, home to the giant saguaro, a plant found in only a small portion of the United States. But you don’t have to travel outside of Gilbert to discover the outdoors. Considered the premier bird-watching facility in the Phoenix metro region, the Riparian Preserve located within Gilbert features hiking and equestrian trails and provides an opportunity for wildlife and bird watching (approximately 250 species of birds have been sighted).
Arizona’s weather–including some of the best Winters in the world–makes it one of the top locations for golf getaways in the United States. Gilbert is home to six major parks and an array of specialty parks. Below are just some of the gems you can find when you visit Gilbert.
Gilbert, named a Bicycle Friendly Community, is well known for its Central Trail System that offers 135 miles of enjoyment for outdoor enthusiasts. Along with equestrian tracks are more than 54 miles of marked bike trails where you can ride along the canals.
There are three trail systems running north-south—Heritage Trail, Santan Vista Trail, and Marathon Trail—and one that runs east-west (Western Powerline Trail). They connect to most of Gilbert’s parks and parallel the Valley’s canal system maintained by the Salt River Project. The trail experience is enhanced by pocket parks that offer shade, drinking fountains, ramadas, and other recreational features. One ramada, that borders the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, depicts the famous Da Vinci Flying Machine and features quotes from the masters of astronomy.
Gilbert may be a large town, but its friendly atmosphere and unique amenities are a continual draw for visitors. Situated only 17 miles southeast of Phoenix, Gilbert offers easy access and a quick commute to two airports.
The nearest major airport is Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA / KIWA). This airport has domestic flights from Mesa, Arizona and is 12 miles from the center of Gilbert, AZ.
Another major airport is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX / KPHX), which has international and domestic flights from Phoenix, Arizona and is 20 miles from Gilbert, AZ
