Celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day with ULM Softball Head Coach Molly Fichtner

In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, we had the privilege of sitting down with Molly Fichtner, Head Softball Coach at the University of Louisiana Monroe. From her days as a competitive athlete to leading a dynamic program at ULM, Coach Fichtner’s journey is one of resilience, passion, and impact.

Growing up, Molly Fichtner was always drawn to sports. “I always had a ball in my hand,” she shared. Though she played multiple sports throughout her childhood, softball emerged as her true passion in high school. That decision would shape the rest of her life, leading her to a successful career as a collegiate athlete and eventually, a coach.

Fichtner’s playing career began at the University of Texas, San Antonio, but she later transferred to the University of Alabama to compete at one of the highest levels in collegiate softball. As a walk-on junior, she experienced firsthand what it takes to be part of a championship-winning program. Her senior year at Alabama included an SEC championship and a trip to the Women’s College World Series, where her team finished as national runners-up.

“Playing at Alabama taught me so much about preparation and leadership,” Fichtner recalled. “I even kept a binder to take notes from my coach, Patrick Murphy, and I still use it to this day.”

Fichtner’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just 12 years old, she had to manage her condition while balancing the demands of being a competitive athlete. “Back then, the technology wasn’t what it is now, so it was a constant balancing act with travel, practices, and games,” she said. This experience shaped her resilience and determination, qualities she now instills in her players.

After playing professionally for a year, Fichtner transitioned to coaching, combining her love of softball with her desire to inspire young women. “Coaching allows me to impact lives in a way that goes beyond the game,” she explained. From teaching her players life skills like professional handshakes to supporting their academic achievements, Fichtner focuses on preparing her athletes for success both on and off the field.

One of her favorite aspects of coaching? Seeing her players grow and develop. “Watching them transform from freshmen into confident seniors, ready to take on the world—that’s what fills my cup,” she shared.

As the ULM Warhawks prepare for their upcoming season, Fichtner is excited about the team’s potential. “We had an incredible year in 2024 with the most regular season wins since 1997,” she said. “This year, our goal is to win the Sun Belt. Our team is motivated, competitive, and ready to make it happen.”

National Girls and Women in Sports Day holds special meaning for Fichtner. “I’m grateful for the pioneers who pushed through barriers, making it possible for women like me to have these opportunities,” she said. “Today, young girls can turn on the TV and watch women competing at the highest level, which is so inspiring.”

Coach Fichtner and the ULM Warhawks are inviting the community to join them for their games this season. “We’d love to have you out at our games,” she said. “Your support means the world to us.”

This National Girls and Women in Sports Day, we celebrate leaders like Coach Molly Fichtner, who are shaping the future of women’s sports and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
