Florida Women’s Hockey League Tournament to Close Historic Year for Ice Hockey in Palm Beach County

When the first puck drops on September 27 at the Florida Women’s Hockey League’s Lake Worth Tournament at the Palm Beach Skate Zone, it will mark the final hockey event of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission’s fiscal year—a year that saw record growth for the sport.

In fiscal year 2023, The Palm Beaches hosted six ice hockey events, generating approximately $3.8 million in economic impact. That figure is projected to rise to nearly $7.5 million after the Palm Beach County Sports Commission’s tourism development efforts resulted in the hosting of 13 ice hockey events in fiscal year 2024.

The Sports Commission’s efforts were bolstered by the opening of Palm Beach County’s newest ice facility, the Boca Ice and Fine Arts Center in Boca Raton, bringing the County’s total number of ice sheets to six. Palm Beach Skate Zone in Lake Worth Beach operates three sheets, and Palm Beach Ice Works in West Palm Beach has one.

With world-class facilities and amenities in The Palm Beaches, the Sports Commission has made a concerted effort to attract more ice hockey events to the region. This is evident by the support of several ice hockey event organizers for the first time, including Hockey International and the FWHL.

The FWHL has been a strong economic contributor throughout fiscal year 2024, generating over $800,000 in economic impact through three events hosted in The Palm Beaches. The FWHL’s Lake Worth Tournament is expected to attract over 200 athletes from across Florida and nationwide.
