Lansing, Michigan, has become a powerhouse in the bowling world, earning a reputation as one of the nation’s top hosts for competitive events. With a world-class bowling venue, seamless event execution, and a commitment to creating unforgettable experiences, Lansing has become a true hub for bowling competitions at every level—from state and regional championships to national collegiate tournaments. At the heart of this success is the Lansing Sports Commission, which prides itself on delivering an exceptional experience for athletes, organizers, and visitors alike.
Lansing’s rise as a bowling hub has earned it the well-deserved nickname of ‘The Bowling Capital of the U.S.’ This success is fueled by its prime location, just 90 minutes from 90% of Michigan’s population. Its central position also puts it within easy reach of neighboring states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois, drawing participants from all over the region and boosting attendance at state tournaments.
Building on this momentum, Lansing set its sights on national competitions, including high-profile NCAA events. After successfully hosting the NCAA National Collegiate Women’s Bowling Regional in 2021, Lansing firmly established itself as a leader in collegiate bowling, with events lined up through 2028.
“One of our strategies was recognizing our strong bowling community and the success of past state tournaments. So we asked ourselves, ‘What’s next?’ Our team decided to bid on NCAA events, and once we were awarded that first one, it felt like the ball was rolling—no pun intended,” says Meghan Ziehmer, Executive Director of the Lansing Sports Commission. As Lansing continues to host prestigious tournaments, its status as the Bowling Capital of the U.S. grows stronger, thanks in large part to its key venue partner, Royal Scot Golf and Bowl.
Located on Lansing’s west side, Royal Scot Golf and Bowl is the city’s hub for elite bowling competitions. Just minutes from top hotels, restaurants, and local attractions, it provides an all-encompassing experience for visiting teams and fans alike.
With 60 lanes and recent upgrades—including enhanced spaces and high-tech ball returns—Royal Scot has solidified its place as a premier venue. The crown jewel? The world’s largest digital board in a bowling center, spanning all 60 lanes, a cutting-edge addition unveiled in summer 2024. More than just a facility, its team plays an active role in event planning, working closely with organizers and the local bowling community—contributing to its impressive lineup of past events and major tournaments ahead in close partnership with the Lansing Sports Commission.
The Lansing Sports Commission isn’t just a host—it’s the driving force behind unforgettable bowling events. From coordinating event logistics to curating seamless experiences, the team goes beyond logistics to elevate every tournament. Whether it’s arranging hotel blocks, showcasing local attractions, or rolling out the red carpet with welcome booths, their hands-on approach ensures every event feels bigger, better, and uniquely Lansing. “We like to say that we’re in the memory-making business,” says Ziehmer.
For smaller tournaments, the Lansing Sports Commission amps up the hospitality, delivering personalized welcome packets, rallying community support, and showcasing the best of the region. But when it comes to major events like the NCAA Regionals, NAIA, and NJCAA National Championships, their role expands even further. Acting as the main point of contact for governing bodies, the team manages contracts, hotel logistics, volunteer recruitment, and all hospitality needs—ensuring a seamless experience for participants and organizers.
Backed by a premier venue and a track record of bowling success, Lansing is gearing up to host some of the most competitive collegiate tournaments in the nation over the next several years. The road ahead is packed with marquee events, from the NJCAA and NAIA Men’s & Women’s Bowling National Championships to the grand finale—the National Collegiate Women’s Bowling National Championships in 2028. The Lansing Sports Commission goes above and beyond to enhance the athlete experience for these Championship events. Understanding that bowling athletes deserve the same recognition as those in major sports, the team works tirelessly to transform Royal Scot into a championship-level venue. From custom signage and team logos to floor decals, a custom donut wall with NCAA blue-and-white treats, balloon arches, and light-up letters, every detail is thoughtfully designed to create an environment that truly honors the significance of the competition. “For some of these athletes, this may be the last event they ever compete in, and we want them to walk away with an experience they’ll never forget,” says Ziehmer.
Lansing’s reputation as a bowling hub isn’t just about hosting major championships—it’s about continually raising the bar. In just three years, the city has welcomed the NJCAA National Championships, NAIA National Championships, and NCAA Regionals, proving its ability to deliver top-tier events across all levels of competition.
Lansing isn’t stopping there. Recognizing a gap in the sport, the city teamed up with Elmhurst University to launch the Division III National Bowling Invitational—an event that didn’t previously exist for this division. What began with just seven teams in its inaugural year has already gained traction, with plans to return this fall, bigger and better than before.
“We saw an opportunity to create something unique with a Division III Invitational. In its first year, we started with just seven teams, but the success and experience in January spoke for itself. The coaches came together and recognized the potential, and now we’re bringing it back this November with plans to grow it to 16 or even 20 teams. Our goal is to establish this as a premier standalone Division III event, building on the momentum of our past successes.” – Meghan Ziehmer, Executive Director of the Lansing Sports Commission.
Bowling events bring significant economic benefits to the Lansing area, drawing thousands of visitors and generating revenue for local businesses. But beyond the numbers, these tournaments contribute to the city’s identity, fostering traditions and repeat visitors who establish connections with local restaurants, hotels, and attractions.
“What makes Lansing special is not just the level of competition we bring in, but the experience we create,” says Ziehmer. “Every city has the ability to host its own version of a ‘Super Bowl,’ and for us, that’s making sure every bowler feels like a champion.”
As Lansing continues to attract top-tier bowling competitions, its commitment to hospitality, innovation, and athlete-centered experiences ensures that it remains a go-to destination for years to come.
