After successfully hosting the NCAA National Collegiate Women’s Bowling Regional in 2021, Lansing firmly established itself as a leader in collegiate bowling, with events lined up through 2028.

“One of our strategies was recognizing our strong bowling community and the success of past state tournaments. So we asked ourselves, ‘What’s next?’ Our team decided to bid on NCAA events, and once we were awarded that first one, it felt like the ball was rolling—no pun intended,” says Meghan Ziehmer, Executive Director of the Lansing Sports Commission. As Lansing continues to host prestigious tournaments, its status as the Bowling Capital of the U.S. grows stronger, thanks in large part to its key venue partner, Royal Scot Golf and Bowl.

With 60 lanes and recent upgrades—including enhanced spaces and high-tech ball returns—Royal Scot has solidified its place as a premier venue. The crown jewel? The world’s largest digital board in a bowling center, spanning all 60 lanes, a cutting-edge addition unveiled in summer 2024. More than just a facility, its team plays an active role in event planning, working closely with organizers and the local bowling community—contributing to its impressive lineup of past events and major tournaments ahead in close partnership with the Lansing Sports Commission.

But when it comes to major events like the NCAA Regionals, NAIA, and NJCAA National Championships, their role expands even further. Acting as the main point of contact for governing bodies, the team manages contracts, hotel logistics, volunteer recruitment, and all hospitality needs—ensuring a seamless experience for participants and organizers.

From custom signage and team logos to floor decals, a custom donut wall with NCAA blue-and-white treats, balloon arches, and light-up letters, every detail is thoughtfully designed to create an environment that truly honors the significance of the competition. “For some of these athletes, this may be the last event they ever compete in, and we want them to walk away with an experience they’ll never forget,” says Ziehmer.

Building a Bowling Legacy

Lansing’s reputation as a bowling hub isn’t just about hosting major championships—it’s about continually raising the bar. In just three years, the city has welcomed the NJCAA National Championships, NAIA National Championships, and NCAA Regionals, proving its ability to deliver top-tier events across all levels of competition.

Lansing isn’t stopping there. Recognizing a gap in the sport, the city teamed up with Elmhurst University to launch the Division III National Bowling Invitational—an event that didn’t previously exist for this division. What began with just seven teams in its inaugural year has already gained traction, with plans to return this fall, bigger and better than before.

“We saw an opportunity to create something unique with a Division III Invitational. In its first year, we started with just seven teams, but the success and experience in January spoke for itself. The coaches came together and recognized the potential, and now we’re bringing it back this November with plans to grow it to 16 or even 20 teams. Our goal is to establish this as a premier standalone Division III event, building on the momentum of our past successes.” – Meghan Ziehmer, Executive Director of the Lansing Sports Commission.
