Swansboro came alive recently as it hosted the second annual Movin’ Mullet 5K on October 5th, attracting 405 enthusiastic registrants (a sellout and then some) from near and far. This event has become a “kickoff” to the Mullet Festival than happens one week later. Adding the race to the local calendar helps promote fitness, community spirit, a love for the outdoors, fun (think mullet wigs and bright attire) and sports tourism. The estimated economic impact from the event was $8,278.
Participants enjoyed a picturesque route that showcased the natural beauty of Swansboro. The 5K started and ended at what is known as The Pug, and the course wound through the charming neighborhoods and along the scenic waterfront, providing runners with stunning views of the area’s unique landscapes. Runners have commented on the hills in downtown Swansboro that you don’t see in most other parts of Onslow County.
Runners of all skill levels participated, from seasoned runners to first-time racers. Hopefully all the planning ensured that everyone could enjoy the race, regardless of experience. Awards were given to top overall runners and first place finishers in each age division and all participants received a finisher medal, celebrating their accomplishment.
Along with the Sports Commission, this year’s Movin’ Mullet 5K also supported the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern North Carolina, with a portion of the registration fees going to community initiatives. As the final cleanup of equipment happened on what was a successful race day, the excitement for next year’s Movin’ Mullet 5K began to brew (October 4, 2025) with hopes of attracting even more participants and enhancing the community’s involvement. We think the Movin’ Mullet 5K is becoming a beloved tradition in Swansboro and a great way to celebrate fall and the Mullet Festival.
Thanks to all who participated, volunteered, and supported, including the Town of Swansboro, Swansboro Parks and Recreation, Swansboro Public Works, Swansboro Police and so many others.
