The city of Auburn is gearing up to elevate its sports tourism appeal with the expansion of the Lake Wilmore Community Center at 737 Ogletree Road. Anticipated to be completed by the end of August 2024, the project aims to cater to the city’s growing recreational needs and attract new athletes and visitors.
The upgraded Lake Wilmore Community Center will feature state-of-the-art amenities, including two full-sized basketball courts, locker rooms, activity rooms, a fitness room, and a multi-use area. Additionally, the center will have an elevated indoor walking track, office and storage space, a zero-entry pool, and a heated lap pool, all equipped to promote year-round use.
A highlight of the expansion project is the addition of 12 covered pickleball courts, addressing the surging demand for this popular sport.
“Investing in pickleball infrastructure is about meeting residents’ needs and attracting sports tourism dollars,” said Ann Bergman, public relations specialist for Auburn Parks and Recreation.
The city also anticipates a second phase of this project to be constructed in 2024, which will include four new lighted multi-purpose athletic fields and six additional pickleball courts. The turf fields will support year-round sports activities, while the addition of six courts will bring the complex’s total to 18.
The Lake Wilmore Community Center expansion is poised to position Auburn as a premier destination for sports tourism, further solidifying its status as a vibrant and dynamic city.
