When deciding where to host new events, many factors come into play for a tournament organizer. Facilities play a major role in decisions on where events can be held. Quality of teams is another factor that organizers take into consideration. Another is location. Every city has fields, but not every city can host a showcase travel baseball tournament.
Last year, Prospect Wire made the decision to expand beyond their annual event schedule. While attending the Connect Sports Spring Marketplace in 2023, Prospect Wire President Brian Werner had a meeting with a Sales Manager from a small town in Utah.
“I knew something was there after meeting with Millie Osguthorpe. The way she spoke about her town, the facilities, the people…I just had a feeling we could bring something to Utah,” remarked Werner.
In the weeks that followed, more discussions were had about the possibility of bringing an event to Ogden. It eventually progressed to a site visit, allowing Prospect Wire & Werner to see the facilities first hand, experience the city as a unique visitor and get to know the people in the town.
“I was hooked from minute one,” exclaimed Werner. “The drive from Salt Lake City up to Ogden was so remarkable. Pretty sure I spent the entire drive just looking out the window at the landscape. I knew before seeing the first field, this was somewhere Prospect Wire needed to be.”
After 2 days of visiting fields, restaurants and hotels, Werner returned to Florida with a drive to finalize the details of an event. In the weeks that followed, Brian & Millie crafted out some potential dates, eventually settling on June 7-10, 2024. “It was such a cool process for me personally,” said Werner. “I have helped create new events, but they are usually always in states we have previously run things in before. Since taking over in 2021, I had not brought a brand new event to a brand new state before. So this was something I have really taken pride in.”
With registrations in full swing, the Ogden Open already has 17 teams signed up, a solid figure for a brand new event Werner said. The expectation is that now that the snow is melting, more teams will start getting back on the field and registrations will continue to increase.
“We are excited to showcase our town, our facilities and everything that makes Ogden a hidden gem in the Rocky Mountains,” stated Millie Osguthorpe, Sales Director for Visit Ogden. “We could not be more excited to partner with Prospect Wire to bring a first class tournament to our city. From historical 25th Street, to the mountains that surround our city, to the perfect weather for baseball, Ogden is ready to show out this June!”
Registration is open at play.prospectwire.com for ages 14-18U.
