The Beach Is Where Every Sport Can Call Home

What do competitive sports and 19 million annual vacationgoers have in common? They belong at The Beach – Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Over the years, Myrtle Beach has proved it has the facilities for major competition, from gymnastics meets to PGA Tour events, and the popular beach destination continues to raise the bar.

Across 60 miles of beaches and 14 communities, Myrtle Beach has world-class facilities, accommodations and entertainment that can suit every sport and its athletes, families and fans. In fact, this past spring, the Sports Business Journal named Myrtle Beach a top city in America to host sporting events.

Here are some highlights of the area’s facilities:

  • The Myrtle Beach Convention Center features over 300,000 square feet of event space and a prime location two blocks from the ocean.
  • Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium and Ashley Booth Field has an NCAA–certified lighted track, a FieldTurf field and 5,000 seats.
  • Styers Athletic Complex offers complimentary livestreaming of events at its 11 fields.
  • Coastal Carolina University recently hosted two NCAA events: The Myrtle Beach Bowl for football and the Myrtle Beach Invitational for men’s basketball.

While the facilities themselves are enough to ensure a successful sporting event, it’s the coordination of the venue operators, the Visit Myrtle Beach sports planning team and city officials that helps take every event to the next level.

“Everyone knows teamwork is key to sports, and we share that same philosophy with sporting event planning,” says Jonathan Paris, executive director of sports tourism at Visit Myrtle Beach. “Our destination is continually hosting larger and higher-profile events, and I contribute it all to our collective dedication to hosting successful sporting events.”
