About Beeches Golf Club

Beeches Golf Club, of South Haven, Michigan, is an 18-hole championship golf course designed by award-winning Michigan architect W. Bruce Matthews III.

"South Haven is a wonderful resort town on the shores of Lake Michigan whose population swells each summer with visitors from all over Michigan, Indiana and metropolitan Chicago," said Matthews. "But until now, it's been one of the few areas in the Great Lakes region where there's been both the need and the acreage for more affordable golf courses. I believe we've served both rather well at Beeches."

The club's name is taken from the scores of beech trees found on the property, including a majestic giant beech that sits in close proximity to the clubhouse and 18th green. "That tree is the unmistakable centerpiece of the property ..." Bruce realized this immediately and decided to incorporate it as both a strategic and aesthetic focal point of the golf course. "This giant beech frames the 18th hole on the left, combined with the water on the right means players will have to be on their best behavior when they approach this green!"

The Beeches course features plenty of water with six large ponds on the property. Adding teeth to the test, Matthews has also made good use of sandy waste areas throughout the course.

The Beeches Golf Club, and its five sets of tees, ranges in length from forward tees of 5,005 yards to 7,115 from the back tees. Because of the close proximity to Lake Michigan, there was no need to load the design with a lot of obstacles. The changing winds provide the variety in playability.

Matthews' thoughtful design allows the club to operate with an affordable rate structure for its visitors. Building a course the community can always afford to play was important. The days of nice courses only being available at a private club are over. In 2007, Beeches Golf Club celebrated the first full year of operation and the initial responses from area golfers has been great and very complimentary.

Matthews says that Beeches has the acreage available to build a third set of nine holes in the years ahead.
