About Tire Mountain Trail

This 6.1 mile (9.8 km) trail provides a good hike and scenic views. It climbs through numerous switchbacks, crosses many small streams on log bridges and passes through old growth tree stands. At the four-mile mark, a side trail provides access to the top of Tire Mountain. In earlier days, a fire lookout, consisting of a platform on a topped tree and a three-sided shelter on the ground, was located on the large, flat top.

The trail continues for an additional 2 miles to the junction with the Alpine Trail. The trail crosses several steep sloped meadows located below rocky outcrops. These provide good views toward the southeast. Wildflowers grow profusely on the top and in the meadows. The trail can be soggy in the spring, but dries out by late May in the lower elevations and mid-June in the higher elevations.

This trail is a part of the Eugene to Pacific Crest Trail system. It is open to hikers, horses, mountain bikes and motorcycles. Horses need to beware of mountain beaver holes in the eastern two-miles of tread.
